3 Recommendations for Pride Month
June is recognized as Pride month in the United States. Pride is a nationwide celebration of our LGBTQIA2S+ community and their stand against oppression. Quick quiz - do you know all the letters and numbers I just stated? Here are the answers.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Two-Spirit, Plus (may include pansexual, gender queer, and many more)
One way to celebrate Pride month is learning more about the incredible legacy and stories of the queer community. I’m using “queer” here as an umbrella term for the LGBTQIA2S+ community. I’m recommending three different forms of media for your enjoyment.
Disclosure: The Movie is a documentary, and the focus is media representation of the transgender community. The film and television industries are highlighted. Watching this documentary brought me to my knees. I could see myself laugh and participate in the oppressive ways that media portrays the transgender community (Ex. Ace Ventura movie). I felt sick after understanding my participation in this harmful process.
Instagram: @alokvmenon - Alok Vaid-Menon is a writer and entertainer who provides book reviews about gender and sexual orientation. They also post pictures and comments from followers that aim to each everyone. I especially love their book, Beyond the Gender Binary, which explores gender in just 64 pages.
Audiobook: Over the Top by Jonathan Van Ness is a memoir by one of the hosts of the updated Queer Eye television series. Jonathan Van Ness (JVN) shares their story about growing up queer in a small town, finding hope in their passion for the Olympics, and using Internal Family Systems therapy to live authentically. The audio version is just magic.
